Media Player doesn't play MPEGs

MPEGs -1 and -2 don't work. Have tried Irfanviewer, Real, Cine, Media Center, and Windows Media Players 9, 10 and 11. Have made MPEGs with Pinnacle Studio and AVS video converter - these, as well as anything I download - do not work at all on my machine.

On MPEG-2s, the sound comes through with MS/MS copycat (like Roxio) programs, but no video at all. There is no video or audio with Real or Irfanviewer for MPEG-2s. MPEG-1s for all programs have no video, and chirpy-type noises that in no way resemble the movies themselves.

I've restored my PC (which I've only owned for 2 months), and have verified a sample of the same MPEGs work fine with my laptop.

I've gone to the Microsoft website, downloaded and installed a CODEC checking program; according to Microsoft, I've got all the available codecs.

According to Registry Mechanic 6.0.0.750, my registry is fine.
