    Problem with Yorkshire Terrier Gagging
    Hi:

This morning we gave the little guy some medicine in a syringe that was prescribed for him by the vet. He's been taking it the whole week. That's not the problem. Then he started to choke and gag so we figured it had gone down the wrong way. We've even turned him upside down. We have finally given him some prednicort that we had from the vet previously. The gagging has decreased.

    Any suggestions?

It may not be normal at all! Most cases of dog gagging are caused by foreign objects in the mouth, throat, or esophagus, but it can also be caused by some health problems such as kennel cough or even tracheal collapse.

Tracheal collapse is a chronic, progressive disease involving the windpipe, or trachea. It cold be something minor as elongated soft palate. Some breeds of dogs have this anatomical problem in which the soft palate is elongated, partially obstructing the airway during breathing. This results in gagging, snorting, snoring, and gurgling, especially during and after exercise.

It could be roundworms or a heart murmur. The point is, is gagging and retching really isn't "normal", something is causing it. But only your vet can tell you what.

Is the dog actively gagging? Like dry heaves? Or is he just snorting like a backwards sneeze?

If you gave a medicine that is going to suppress coughing, than naturally the cough is going go away. Medicines will not prevent a gag-like response.

A backwards sneeze, which sounds like honking, is very common in dogs with allergies. And due to the fact you gave a second medicine and this reaction stopped, I'm leaning towards a backwards sneeze rather than a gag. But I'm not a vet, not have I seen your dog..

Instead of giving random medications, you should really take your pet back into the vet if you are concerned.

Him swallowing wrong will resolve itself fairly quickly. If he continues to cough/gag after this suspicion, than its not due to him swallowing wrong.

Please take your dog to the vet and stop giving random medications.
