An oldie but a goodie

I watched too much TV when I was young but I loved TV - some movies stuck and this is one of them.. I remember I was watching alone and in the end it made me cry. It was black and white no the best quality I think? Looking back I cannot remember if it was Dennis Hopper or an actor who had the same resonance. He was on the run from the law maybe an escaped convict? He some how was in a remote place woods I think he ended up in a shack/house the girl there was either blind or maybe just young she was young. He held her captive sort of anyway they ended up talking I remember they were by a fireplace. In the end he knew the police were closing in, by this time they had connected emotionally and she and he had fallen in love. Sadly he left her by the fireplace and said remember the good and left and I think he was shot and killed heart breaking..remember no smut just true quality - maybe I have romanticised it since my childhood but do you know the movie I would so love to know.......... Please help :-)

That's it but question OBI - was there an earlier version? I have a different picture in my head - big thanks your a legend :-) - but do you know if there was an earlier version of this strpoy line ? have great day and many thanks.
