family movies

I am interested in family movie recommendations, or favorite family movies, that are "safe" for young children (mine are 4 and 6) Also ones that you DON'T recommend. Since I've hurt my back I've seen quite a few with my kids. The latest one we saw was a miniseries called Dinotopia. The kids loved it for the dinosaurs of course, but it also had a good message. Nanny McPhee is a good recent one, too. I personally enjoyed the the Chronicles of Narnia, but it was too scary for my 4 year old... he had nightmares. Same thing with A Series of Unfortunate Events. The kids were scared by it.

My two favorites from my childhood were The Neverending Story and E.T. And of course I loved The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin too.

Mary Poppins, The sound of Music, Annie,Benji, are all good classics.
My daughter was terrified of " the moke monter" in Ferngully! It was the machine that cut down the trees and the smoke/smog it produced scare her to death at age 5.But still a great movie with a good story.

orange agrees: Thanks Stormy, I forgot about the Benji movies... and yeah Ferngully scared my 4 year old, too. Then again, he is also scared of the Count from Sesame Street.

Being 55, I still love the old Walt Disney and now the newer ones. I love the Lion King, Land Before Time, Ice Age I and II, Lady and the Tramp, Aristocats and many, many more.
I'm getting my collection out and ready for my grandchild - and he/she is not even here yet.
Oh, and the Jungle Book, Strawberry Shortcake series, My Little Ponies, ...

OK, I'll stop for now - those should hold you for a while.

orange agrees: Yeah I loved that movie, too. And I'm glad the cat didn't actually die. If it had, I don't think I'd let the kids watch it.

orange agrees: Thank you! I have never seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. LOL actually it reminds me of Jim Carrey, since he sings the theme song in one of his Ace Ventura movies.

Two of my favorites are Babe, and Babe - Pig In The City, the sequel. The first one has many variations of Saint-Saens Symphony #3 (The Organ Symphony) as a continuing theme. The talking pigs, dogs, sheep etc. are very well done. There are a couple of mild references to barnyard animals being consumed by their owners. The sequel has one scene where a sheep is attacked by dogs, and fails to survive. You might preview it first to see if it is appropriate for the kids. I guarantee that you will enjoy them both. Homeward Bound - The Incredible Journey, and The Bear are on my A list. I have a weakness for any film with real critters.

orange agrees: I totally forgot about Babe! I loved that movie. The only thing is, my kids are self-imposed vegetarians, and so seeing that movie will make them even worse I think! But they'll love it. :)

These are all really great recommendations guys. I've seen most of the movies mentioned, but most I had also forgotten about, so thanks so much for reminding me!
