an alien movie from the 80's

This has been bothering me...and I cant remember what the name of the movie is.

Let me describe as best as I can remember about the movie. It seems it was a movie about an alien child who was left without his parents....the thing I remember about this movie is that I took my little boy to see it thinking it would have a wonderful ending (as most do)...but, from what I remember the little alien boy dies....we were really shocked and so were other parents who all brought their children to see it

....so my question is: Do you recognize this movie and if so, what is the title?

Is it "The Little Prince"? A pilot (Richard Burton) crashes in a desert and meets this little boy who tells about living on his own little planet and caring for his rose?

Is it D.A.R.Y.L.L. (Data Analyzing Robot Youth Form)? It has Michael McKean (Lenny from Lavern and Shirley) and Mary Beth Hurt.
