looking for title

I have seen a movie set in Romania or Bulgaria in the period 1940-1990. The main character is hidden in the basement by his friend during WW2, but is not told the war is over for several years. The movie then follows their lives through Communism, etc. The music in this movie is especially striking- lots of brass. Hope someone can remember the name. Thanks
