Need the title of an old kid's movie

I'm trying to remember the title of a 1960's kid's movie.
In it a boy, possibly indian, carves a toy wooden canoe. He places it high on a mountain in winter. When the thaw comes, the canoe slides down the hill and into a stream. The rest of the movie follows the canoe on its long trip to the sea where it is found by a sailor.
I think there was a message carve into the canoe(?)

Does anyone remember this movie?
