80s Fantasy Heroic movie

Let me try here.. I 've been searching for this movie the last 10 years.
Its a fantasy movie that kinda reminds LOTR first part and Dungeons & Dragons..

I remember it was the first movie I saw that had a fighter, a dwarf like, and elf and magicians..

The fighter is trying to complete a mission and on its way he gathers the rest of the fighters. They found the dwarf which handles a huge axe and an elf like that is very fast in throwing arrows. The dwarf was living in a forest.

One specific scene I remember is that the fighter enters a room that has a lot of caped-beings and as he walks in, he is definately going to be caught/die but a hawk flies in and stands on his shoulder. Then all the beings stand aside and he can move inner..

Any help would be forever appreciated!!!

I've never seen it, but according to the Knights of the Dinner Table, Hawk the Slayer is the single most awesome movie ever created. And who am I to doubt them?
