HD Sportster electrical system goes dead when trying to start

I have a 2002 HD 1200 Sportster. Lately when I turn the ignition on and hit the start button everything goes dead. You can turn the key many times and it is completely dead. Wait one or two days stick the key in and it starts right up. This has happened four times in the last two months. It is not the battery. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be?
