monitor no signal

Hey I wonder if anyone can help me. I really do not know a lot about computers. But I have an Emachine T3092, its about 4 years old. My old monitor gets a no signal response so a friend told me monitor was bad. I went and bought a new one and same thing. I took side panel off and cleaned up dust. Of course I will take new monitor back. On occassion when I power up PC, which does power up, I get a message of start windows in last known mode. It did work once when I clicked that on but not anymore.
Everything seems to be hooked up right. It almost seems like the pc is not reading the monitor for exhistance. Connection there seems to look okay.
Can anyone give me some advice. Monitor does shut itself off after no signal message.
