Display problems

Hello everyone. I am Lyn, and am not used to asking questions on site, so excuse me if I ramble a bit. The problem is when I start my computer. The desktop starts up fine, using the settings it is programed with. Then suddenly, it flickers for a moment, and I lose content, then it restarts, and the display has changed, the icons, everthing have reverted to different, large settings. I have run a diagnostic test, and get a message saying I have a WINSOCK problem. Can anyone please let me know what I have to do to sort this out.

Many thanks .. Lyn

Did this just start happening?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any Software or Hardware that you installed or setup.

What OS?

If just started happening, I would suggest a system restore back to date/time when this was not happening

Steps below are the same for Vista

System Restore
-Go down till you see
How to use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state
How to restore Windows XP to a previous state

post back with any info that may come up

Hi Seahwk
Thank you for replying. I did already try a system restore, which didn't cure the problem. I had downloaded a couple of free software programs, which I have since deleted from the system. I've also shut down a soundmax program. Since I've done this the display starts up fine. So hopefully problem solvered.

sounds like soundmax may have been issue, but if all is working now since removing those items, hopefully that will be it.

When I shut off my computer at night, it loses the date, and I have to reenter it each morning. Whats the problem? and, how do I fix it?
