black border round my monitor screen

i have a old opus technology monitor cm1414e ,200 240v ,0.6a ,50\60hz it was manufactured in 1992 . The sreen is normal when turned on but when my computer starts loading my windows xp home edition it develops a black border which shrinks the viewing area of the screen i tried altering sreen resolution etc to no avail please anybody know owt

Older monitors from that era often did not have the "smarts" to adjust for nor remember image size when switching from one resolution to another. Usually there were knobs, buttons, or dials on the front or bottom edge of the monitor (and rarely on the back) to manually adjust the image both vertically and horizontally to fill the screen.
