looking for a old friend of mine ,but only know her maiden name.how can i find what her name is now without going to a payed site?

Are there any of her family members still around, like parents or brothers whose names wouldn't have changed? Did she grow up in a certain town, that people there remember her and would know her current whereabouts?

Your public library has, or can get, a book about how to find anyone anywhere. Please call and ask them to reserve it for you. It has lots of hints and helps about finding people.
