Finding a missing person who may have died

Hi, another recent post made me wonder if there is a way to find out if a rumor is true about someone I went to junior high with. I was told that she got killed in Lebanon (or somewhere: the details were vague) in the military service about 15 or 20 years ago. It was one of those things that I have always hoped wasn't true, Basically all I know at this point is her maiden name. I sent out letters to people in the area where she used to live to people with the same last name, but got no response at all.

Any ideas? If the rumor is true, I'd at least like to know to pay respects... sounds kind of odd maybe, but she was first serious girlfriend.

Thanks
