so you get yourself together, you walk up to him, you tell him that those girls were being dumb. you arent interested. sorry.

you do not tell him you think hes hideous. thats rude and awful, even if you think its true. its not his fault you dont like him. dont blame him for the idiot girls noise.

You can tell him you didn't say it, and wanted to tell him yourself, so there would be no confusion over the other girl's petty little joke. You don't have to tell him what you think of his looks. That would be rude.

Being honest but polite is the best policy. Have you heard the story about the ugly duckling that turned into a beautiful swan?

Don't treat anybody bad based on looks. Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly personalities go all the way to the bone... and are much longer remembered.

I am glad that you don't plan to insult him. You could still tell him that you didn't say it and wish the other girls wouldn't be so inconsiderate by making their immature jokes at other people's expense.
