directions: convert by multiplying by one.

Jocab rides his bike to school every day. He travels 1and 1/2 miles in 6 minutes. What is Jacob's average rate of speed?

1.5 miles = 1.5 miles/1 * 2/2 = 3/2 miles.
3/2 miles divided by 6 minutes = 3/2 divided by 6 minutes * 60 minutes/1 hour
3/2 miles divided by 1 hour * 60 minutes/6 minutes =
3/2 miles divided by 1 hour * 10 = 30 / 2 miles divided by 1 hour =
15 miles per hour.

------------------------------
solve by isolating unknown:

Marco Polo bought 40 skins for 8 liras:
a) Write the two rates implied by this statement
b)How many skins could he buy for 200 liras
c)What would be the cost of 200 skins

40 skins/8 lira , 8 lira/40 skins (a term must be on top and the other bottom).

40 skins : 8 lira :: ? skins : 200 lira
40 skins/8 lira =x skins/200 lira. multiple both sides by 200 lira to move across.
(40 skins * 200 lira )/ 8 lira = 200 lira(x skins)/200 lira.
(5 skins * 200) /1 = x skins.
1000 = x.

40 skins : 8 lira :: 200 skins :y lira
40 skins / 8 lira = 200 skins / y lira. multiple both sides by y lira.
(y lira * 40 skins)/ 8 lira = (y lira * 200 skins)/y lira.
40 y lira skins/8 lira = 200 skins.
5 y skins = 200 skins.
5y = 200. divide both sides by 5.
5y/5 = 200/5 = y = 40.

I'm not really sure, but I remember a formula, Distance times Rate times Time.. There's ways to find the Distance, and the Rate but I don't know those. Sorry, but I hoped this helped.
