Can i take Riomet OD tablet when i am trying to conceive?

I am trying to become pregnant since 1 yr. my doctor has prescribed Riomet OD 500 mg (Metformin HCL extended release tablet) . I read in internet that this tablet is not advised to take while we are trying to conceive, is this true? if yes then why did my doctor prescribe that for me who is trying to conceive which the doctor knows and prescribed for the same.
