    Xiphoid process
When we were in school, we learned that if you break the xiphoid process while doing CPR on someone, it puncture lungs or the heart. I got hit in the chest several years ago, and it was sore for a long time. I still can't wear certain bras or they will make the center of my chest sore. I was just wondering if you could break the xiphoid process and not know about it right away.

You could have had an old fracture that never healed, or you could have injury to the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum. An x-ray will help rule it out.

also, breaking the xyphoid process will not automatically puncture the heart or lung.

Breaking of the Xphoid Process can lead to tearing in the heart lining and muscle as well as punctures and/or lacerations of the diaphragm. If the Xphoid snaps off completely, it can lacerate the liver. I have taught CPR since 1974 for both American Heart and American Red Cross and spend a great deal of time with correct position and cautions. If someone blows that part of the class off, they are done with the class.

Could you break the Xphoid and not know it? It is possible, anything is possible.
