Serious Pain. Not sure what kind of doctor to see.

Asked Aug 30, 2007, 07:27 AM — 4 Answers
I have this pain in my back...just to the right of my left shoulder blade. I thought I had pulled a muscle, but it doesn't really hurt because I move my arm or anything. So then I thought that maybe it was from stress, like I needed a massage or something. My son and my husband tried to massage it last night, and it was so painful that it took my breath away and made me cry.

I can just be sitting in the chair and I will get a burning, piercing, strong pain. It has been this way for about 4 days now. I would like to go see a doctor about it, but I'm not sure what type of doctor I would need to see. I don't have a regular family physician.

Any ideas?

It could be a pulled muscle, and just not one you are normally using when moving your arm. Does it hurt when you twist your upper body? Have you tried using any pain-killers?

It could also be a pinched nerve.

I believe that if you visit a family practitioner they will give you the same answer, and simply prescribe pain-killers. I would consider consulting a chiropractor. But, I would wait until after the weekend, if it doesn't seem better, then you can make the decision on which health-care provider you wish to consult.

I hope that helps, good luck.

No, it doesn't hurt when I move any particular way. I've taken Advil like it's candy for a couple of days, and it doesn't seem to help.

That would lend more credibility to it being a pinched nerve. But, as I said before, I would wait a few more days before making your decision. If it is a pinched nerve, it could very easily disappear suddenly sometime over the next couple of days.

Go to an urgent care center. No appointment is necessary. You can get some relief and a referral, if necessary.
