Odontoid Fracture

I had an accident not too long ago where I fractured my odontoid (hangman's fracture). My doctor asked me if I had a prior injury to my neck and I said no. My question is: Is it possible to fracture your odontiod and not know it and also without seeking medical attention?? I am over 30 years old and I have never experienced any neck pain or stiffness before accident. Please help.
