A Zit or Staph? Dangerous Triangle?

Asked Feb 28, 2008, 02:44 PM — 8 Answers
A friend of mine recently had an under the skin zit on her nose. When she was talking about it, people freaked out and told her to see a doctor right away, that it was in the "triangle of death" also known as the "dangerous triangle". Now, I have a red bump (small) on my nose, tender, and it is around my "time of the month". Could this just be a zit or some kind of deadly staph infection?

There Is Really No Way To Know. I Guess A Doctor Could Test It And See. But Everyone Has A Form Of Staph On There Skin. There Is A Form Going Around Though That Does Not Respond To Anibiotics. Some People Are Just More Suseptible To It. To Be Safe I Would Just Leave It Alone.

...it's way more likely that it's a zit rather than a staph infection. Even if it IS staph infection, a small bump on the nose is a minor case of staph rather than a deadly one. Give it a few days. If it still exists (red, tender, and swollen after 3 - 4 days), then go see a doc.

The doc should be able to diagnose and prescribe an antibiotic cream.

Most likely it is a pimple. Can you rate the pain? On a scale of 0 - 10, with 0 being the least and 10 being the worst.....what is the pain?

The pain is about a 0-1. I felt it last night when my nose would rub against my pillow, but unless I touch my nose, I cannot really feel it. I am due to start my period any day now and I was noticing this morning that it is only slightly red where as my friend had a very noticeable bump on the tip of her nose. I have had these before, but with everyone talking about "deadly triangles" I am more nervous.

I forgot to mention that it is more tender, not a shooting severe pain. It kind of feels like a small bruise if I touch it.

Most likely a zit. Really nothing to worry about. Wait 2 - 3 more days.

You heard right about the dangerous triangle of the face. The thing you probably have is a zit. But most important thing is to avoid rubbing it or "popping" it. This manipulation can lead to the infection being dislodged into the blood stream and directly to the brain (hence the dangerous triangle). Because lets face it the zit is painful because it IS infected.

If you are young, healthy individual (which I am assuming you are) a little staph isn't going to kill you. Even the "bad staph" MRSA. I am a healthcare professional and I have had a MRSA infection, which most of us have. And I am just fine!

With a healthy immune system, we amazing human beings can fight off about anything. Just leave it be and see what happens to it. If it starts to form a head or gets a dark center and you notice you are developing "bumps" elsewhere, then maybe a doctor visit will warrant. But I assure you, if it IS a Staph infection you do not want to go squeezing it and getting that bacteria all over your hands, face, and other things you touch.
