Why is this area swollen?

Asked Sep 17, 2011, 05:09 PM — 2 Answers
I woke up this morning and the area around my neck was hurting. It feels like there is something roughly the size of a ping pong ball in there, and its visibly swollen. I looked up the anatomy of a neck on the internet so that I could tell a doctor where the pain was coming from without actually going to the hospital. Basically the area of The inferior belly of the omhyoid muscle and the trapezius muscle is roughly where the swelling is(on the left side). I should also say that I got in a motorcycle accident about 3-4 weeks ago, and I landed on my left side. My shoulder and the areas I was just telling you about hurt a little bit for a couple days, but went away completely after about a week. Should I go to a hospital, or will this go away on its own? The pain isn't bad enough that I would want to go to a hospital, I'm unemployed and have no money or insurance.

You need to see a doctor. Any rapid swelling is a bad sign. PingPong ball sized could be many things including but not limited to infection. Get it looked at asap.
