Stabbing pains on the left side of back ribs

I'm am experiencing severe stabbing pains on the left side of my back around the ribs. It comes around to the side of my ribs and leaves me slighty breathless. The pain is terrible for about 3 minutes then slowly starts to subside. Any ideas as to what this could be?
