How often do you cath yourself? You do understand that UTIs are a risk of self-cathing because a cath should be done under sterile conditions, don't you?

Did your doctor or nurse explain that to you?

Gina, why do you have to cath yourself? This may be part of the issue at hand.

Gina, I've only found this site today and I've found a few people I have issues in common with but one which I don't (need a new thread for that).
I have to self cath and have had to for about a year now. I have had 3 UTIs which needed antibiotics in the past year, however the previous year you could treble that.

I can make a suggestion for you? Try taking cranberry capsules? Don't bother with the juice as it is full of sugar and will make the UTIs worsen not improve. There is something in cranberry which somehow stops you getting infections and trust me it works. (Does for me) If I do happen to feel an infection coming on, I double the dose and in the majority of cases it clear it up. Obviously not every time though!

I'm afraid I cannot help at all with kidney stones but if you post again I might be able to advise on tactics on how to deal with troublesome specialists. I once saw a bowel specialist who suited his ocupation and I shall leave it to your imagination as to what I thought of him.

Good luck.

Sorry Wiglet, I could not give you another good rep point. But you are right. Cranberry capsules can and do work wonders.

Cranberry works by making the bladder wall slippery in order that bacteria, particularly E. coli can not adhere, and are thus flushed out.
You could also look into herbs that are urinary antiseptics such as goldenseal, pipsissewa or uva ursi (bearberry) -- but certainly clear these with your doctor if considering use of them, as they are generally more substantially potent herbs and may have potential for drug interactions, as well as the known contraindications for certain medical issues.

Comments on this post
Wiglet agrees: Thomas, bearberry AND cranberry combo was something I was considering taking and you are not the first to say it is beneficial. May well be changing my complimentary 'package of meds' thanks to what you've said.

Oh that sucks! Poor thing!

Definitely check your cath technique but I get chronic UTIs and kidney infections (without a cath) and cranberry has helped, as has adding lemon to water and drinking alot of it...

I also started eating 2 yogurts a day and all of these things seem to have helped...

Good luck and best wishes and a giant hug!

If you make sure that you drink plenty of water (as much as you can) as well as your medication then you will flush yourself through and aid recovery. Hope you get well soon, take care love and peace anne x
