hyperthyroidism

I am hyperthyroid and my doctor is scaring me saying I must take care of this immediately or it could kill me in 6-12 months. My pulse rate is around 100. Is this that serious? He put me on Tapazole but I was gaining weight so I stopped it. He was irate! He wants me to have the Iodine therapy next week. He says if I get sick or am in an accident I could have a "thyroid storm" which could also kill me. Is he being too dramatic?
