Doctors can't diagnose cause of pain in torso
A relative has had pain in the lower lung area for years. Sometimes the pain is very sharp, & causes his arm to go numb, & a fluttering sensation in the neck. The carotid artery was checked, & said to be okay.
Doctors have done 2 sonograms, and recently a CAT scan, & can't find anything wrong.
One doctor guessed it might be gallstones, but nothing shows up on the tests.
The 'condition' disappeared for about a year after surgery for a hernia, then returned, & is now causing him a lot of pain.
    Any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks.

It sounds like there may be two separate issues here. Neither of these seems particularly like a circulatory problem, so I'm not sure why the carotid artery was in question. One could be a neurological problem: The sensation in the neck and the numbness in the arm are related, as the arm and hand are innervated in the neck. Is it the whole arm? Are some fingers involved and not others? This does not seem related to any pain in the "lower lung," at least not in an obvious way. Is there shortness of breath or another associated breathing symptom. My suggested would be to ask for a referral to see a specialist (a neurologist to start) to sort this out. Good luck, and I hope he feels better.
