Sometimes called DiGeorge Syndrome as well. You might call this a congenital disease normally diagnosed in childhood and includes a number of conitions such as auto immune diseases, cleft palate or various dieformities in the facial structure and learning disabilities. I would not call it a mental illness.

My daughter has DiGeorge Syndrome. She also has a heart defect. Many times they go hand in hand. She does not have much wrong with her as of yet (17 mos. old) except that part of her thymus gland was missing and she is more prone to colds. She is small, but lively. Her calcium levels are being tested again to see if she needs extra supplementation.

Google DiGeorge Syndrome and you will be able to find tons of info..even more than the hospital could give you.

The Syndrome could be very serious with immune system problems and developmental delay to very mild. One can only tell by watching the child grow up.
