| A deep vein thrombosis of an upper extremity can occur if there is trauma to that arm, if that arm is held immobile for a long time, or if there is a predisposing condition, such as a 'port' or pacemaker or underlying cancer.
Upper arm pain is not specific enough. A heart attack may manifest only as left arm pain.
Of course ther are other potential causes- infection, trauma, muscle strain, etc...
