I have always believed that the fraction of Pi was 22/7.

The decimal value of 22/7 is equal to 3.142857143 to nine decimal points.

However now I find that the value of Pi on my Scientific Calculator is equal to

3.141592654 to nine decimal points.

Can anyone here explain the difference between these two numbers.?

Pi is irrational and transcendental. It has no exact value. If you used 22/7, it is accurate to within .00126.

Pi has been calculated to 10 trillion, yes trillion, decimal places and still has no pattern.

Maybe more than that by now. Someone is always playing around with it to see if they can break the new record. Like finding the largest prime.

When I used Pi in the field, I used what was on the calculator. It gives 3.14159265359

Try 355/113=3.14159292035. It is accurate to within .000000266

22/7 and 355/113 and others, are just fractional approximations. Some better than others.
