It'll be wisest to pαy your monthly bills & hαve enough money for groceries, then put α portion of the money in α sαvings αnd whαtever you hαve left split it with your hubby:-)

One thing thαt is greαt αre envolopes, envolopes, envolopes!

Envolope 1 you plαce money for: bills (like phone, water/heat, internet etc.)
Envolope 2: money for groceries αnd other things such αs toilet pαper, toothpαste.. the bαsics
Envolope 3: sαvings- better yet in α sαvings account
Envolope 4: money for you αnd your husbαnd to split

    * if you don't hαve kids, I suggest you tell his lαzy butt to go get α job--whαt does he do while your αt work?. αnd if you do hαve kids αnd he stαys αt home to tαke cαre of them he shouldn't expect much money since you do hαve kids to think of (clothes, shoes, kids just tαke up α lot of money)

Tell him to get a job because you should be the one getting an allowance. Both of you should be working, splitting the bills and having a good time together with your earnings. There's nothing good aBOUT a spoiled man who depends on a woman. Tell him to grow a backbone or you'll find a real man with one... He is sad!

Actually... I got a PM from the OP. This isn't a case of the guy being a lazy bum, just a case of asking if there are other couples out there who have "personal money" set aside from paychecks, or if other people budget for an "allowance" rather than spending the money as things come up.

I wish the OP would come back and clarify, so that she doesn't receive more posts that assume this is a dead-beat husband.

My boyfriend and I have some sort of arrangement like this actually!

We're both students and we both work, but I'm the one that handles the bills. Every month I would drop my jaw at how much he spends on starbucks without even thinking about it.

SO we devised an allowance system. Every week, he takes out roughly 7% of what he made. If he didn't work so much that week, he gets less, and if he worked his butt off, he gets something at the end of it. It's a small enough of a slice that it doesn't REALLY effect our bills, and it's large enough that him working regular hours gives him about 10 bucks a week to spend on whatever he likes and the little things. He takes out cash, and once it's gone it's gone. If he wants something that doesn't fit with his spending money or our enterainment budget, he has to save or work harder, period.

My wife and I get 100 dollars each every two weeks.. we put any extra money in savings. This money is used for going out for fast food for lunch or just buying a soda from the vending machine. Sometimes I'll save mine up over a month or a month and a half and buy something nice that is only for me. Anything we both would use we compromise and discuss on spending our shared money on it. This arrangement works out great and we never fight about money. However, I think you have to budget first before making this kind of decision. Obviously the amount of income and amount of expenses will play a role in determining a fair allowance amount. But my advice would be to budget everything including the allowance amount and then put the extra into savings instead of budgeting a savings amount and dividing the extra between you and your husband.

An allowance for personnal use should be a part of the budget. Man or woman working or not. Staying home taking care of kids is a job.
