Not knowing where you are in management (Is this a recent promotion? What background and education do you already have? etc.?) I can only give a generic answer.
If you are new to management (and even if you are not), I recommend Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” It’s a little dated, but it will get you 85% of the way there, in whatever industry "there" there happens to be. It’s applicable to general situations.
I suggest reading the book twice. The first time, skim through the book to get the basic concepts. Then read it for comprehension. The material is organized so that you don’t know why you are doing what you are doing until you get there. In other words, all the habits depend on each other, so you can’t fully understand the earlier habits without understanding the later habits.
Fair warning: Covey is a PhD and writes like one.
As far as what technical skills you need for the job, I can’t help either without knowing if you are in warehousing, manufacturing, bottling, or distribution or all of them at once. However I can highly recommend APICS (
www.apics.org), The Association for Operations Management. They offer training and certification in all aspects of operations.
