mudweiser agrees: It's because it was ROBIN WILLIAMS! Awesome actor!
He also played the movie version of Patch Adams...my hero. AND I am going to see Dr. Patch Hunter Adams live on November 4.

Hi Chronix,
Genie's as others have mentioned like the "Genie in the lamp" who grants wishes does not exist.

But Jinns as Edward mentioned do exist, and as per Islamic beliefs, Satan is also a Jinn.
It is believed that Jinns have both righteous ones and wrongdoers, but as their world is mostly invisible to humans, we cannot guess if we come across a good or bad one.
And yes, there have been reported sightings, sometimes heard but not seen.

Edward,
Please refer link by Jesushelper76-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genie

"The French translators of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights used génie as a translation of jinnī because it was similar to the Arabic word in sound and in meaning. This use was also adopted in English and has since become dominant.
The Arabic root JNN means "hidden, concealed", as in the verb janna "to hide, to conceal".

So no Genie is not used just for the good ones, it could be good or bad.
