Does the Davis method work for dyslexia?

Hi,

My 7 yr. old son has dyslexia and I read "The Gift of Dyslexia" and all about the Davis method. I would like to know if anyone tried the Davis method on their own by buying the kit and/or if they had one of the specialists correct their dyslexia via the 1 week program?

Did you have good results and could you give me some detail?

Dyslexia is a very broad term for "problem reader." If your son is having problems with decoding letter sounds and blends (major precursor to reading) then a program stressing phonemic awareness, such as Wilson reading or Fundations, would be a way to effectuate rapid growth. I would speak with your child's teacher to see what the school is using. Then you can reinforce and expand the classroom strategies at home. Working with your son with a differing methodology than he is being exposed to at school might only serve to confuse him as often the terminology and strategies vary from one approach to another.

i was diagnosed when i was about your sons age..... honestly i have no clue what this method was or how it help you cope with you dyslexia. i know you said you read up on it but please please please just know that he will always have it and your are doing the right thing by helping him early. in my experience the only way i wanted to read or learn is when it was fun. just get ready for a lot of serious talks at a young age like why do the other kids laugh when i read or it takes forever for me to finish reading and all the other kids are done... and dont let a teacher make fun/embarrass your kid that is the worst self-esteem issues i have had to deal with... but now im 19 and about to join the coast guard so just always try to do what best for you kid and know he'll turnout alright hope i helped with the emotional parent side

bedette agrees: Thank you so much for your honesty. You may want to check out "the gift of dyslexia" by Ron Davis as it really talks about how very bright people with dyslexia really are.
