bare spot in shade neds seed, but which and how?

We have an extensive area in our backyard under a tree that needs some seeding. Would shade seed work? Even in a large area? If we sodded, how do you take care of that? We've been having a lot of rain lately, wouldn't that influence the seed? If you had a big area, approx 4X6 that needed grass, what would you do? In the meantime, rain just makes big puddles in the yard, not good. thanks for any help. Helen
