Slow Toshiba Satellite A40 due to XP service pack 2?

My A40 is very slow and often the fan runs fast and the computer gets warm (it never crashes). I re-installed Windows a few months ago and it was really fast until I re-installed Win XP Service Pack 2. Then it became slow again. I have downloaded some files that Toshiba recommended for Service Pack 2. Especially Management Console should help but it didn't. I have run registry booster & CCleaner, I have tried to remove some files from Autostart, I have cleaned the disks, I have done defragmentation. Nothing helps.

The system's waiting process seems to utilizew 90% of the CPU. What can be the problem? It seems to have something to do with service pack 2. This is really frustrating.

What about adding some ram?

I know that unit has a small HD, 40gig I think, perhaps if you gave it a little more room to breath, you will get faster performance.

Not sure what else to offer.

Ram is shown as 496 MB (512 MB). HD is 60 GB. I use 21 GB so quite a big part is not used. Enough?
CPU is 3,06 GHz.

Would it be sensible to upgrade RAM to 1024?

Can old drivers be a problem? Would VersionTracker be good to use?

Can Norton IS make the computer slow? I have heard that is slows down computers.

The machine should run fairly reasonably on that specification under XP - SP2 does not generally degrade performance either.

What programs do you have running in the background? NIS does significantly slow the system down - I would suggest uninstalling that , by using the Norton Removal Tool (google it).
