Losst sound through laptops own speakers but can hear through headphones

My HP pavilion laptop has suddenly lost sound. If I plug headphones in I can hear, however the minute I remove the jack there is no sound.
I have tried reinstalling drivers but it says that it failed each time.

I'm not very techy but if somebody could help I would appreciate it?

If you are running Vista, I had the same issue.

It was caused by a bad automatic update to the HD Audio System.

Can you try to restore to a previous date and see if that works?

Good Luck!

thank you progunr, I tried that first, one of the few things I know how to do but it didn't help. I chatted with a HP technician who said that since it was all enabled it was probably the speakers so I should take the laptop to a repair centre reading though some of the other things here it seems quite common, it can't all be speakers surely?
