how to uninstall my yahoo! messenger from my mac

how am i supposed to uninstall or delete my application of yahoo messenger from my laptop when every time i open the program, it doesn't open up. when i try quitting it, nothing shows up. when i drag it to the trash, a pop-up window appears and says yahoo messenger cannot be moved to the trash because its open. and when i try to restart or shut the laptop down, a pop-up window appears again and says "the application yahoo! messenger cancelled shut down." what am i gonna do?

Not familiar with Mac's but this is how would attemp to resolve on windows based machine

right click on taskbar and choose task manager and click the processes tab and then look for anything related to yahoo and then click end process.

now, click on start, run and type msconfig then enter
click the startup tab and in thte list of items there, take the checkmark out anything realted to messenger and then restart pc and you should be able to do what you were looking to do
