thank you progunr, I tried that first, one of the few things I know how to do but it didn't help. I chatted with a HP technician who said that since it was all enabled it was probably the speakers so I should take the laptop to a repair centre

reading though some of the other things here it seems quite common, it can't all be speakers surely?
