automatic updates are driving me crazy

I have a acer laptop with windows vista! Sometimes When i turn it on it starts configuring updates it might take over thirty min to finish. And it does it at the start up before i log on and it wont let me do anything while its configuring. And if it doesnt do it at the start up, it will do it when i'm shutting it down and it wont let me shut down til its done. Can anyone tell me how to turn these automatic updates off.. oh and it doesnt ever say what updates are getting configured. THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY
