    Hello Everyone

I have a question I would like to know so if you could help me I sure would appreciate it. Also this is my first time of on this site so bare with me a little please. I would like to know if I have a caller ID on my computer and the software can I received my calls on my computer and see who is calling me with a private number. I want to know every number that comes through my phone so I can see it and on my land phone private calls does not show up it just saids private call or blocked. Do you know of any software that I can download or buy for my computer that would allow me to see the private number and get the number.

    Thank you kindly

CallerID is a signaling/service that your phone company sends you. It isn't a function of your phone. Your phone/computer has to be able to accept and interpret the signal that you get from the phone company in order to display CallerID info. So if your home phone can display numbers but can't display "private" or "unknown" then your computer won't either.

It would definitely be nice to be able to see all those pesky unknown/private number's wouldn't it but unfortunately that's not possible without getting additional paid services to display unknown/private numbers from your phone company. For example, 911 operators always see your number even if it is private/unlisted. Recently phone companies started to offer these expanded services to commercial entities for additional fees.

    Good luck

Call you phone company and request that everyone who calls you dial *82... it MAKES them display their phone # if they want to reach you... atleast here in NY it does...

Just to clarify what Tommyp said... you really can't call the phone company and ask for the private number to show up on your phone. What you can do is request that you not accept blocked numbers so anyone that has their number blocked by default to be forced to dial *82 in order for them to call you. If they don't dial *82 and they try to dial your number then your phone won't even ring and they'll get a message telling them that they need to unblock their number first.

Now there are Tricks that you can do which could reveal a blocked number. Here's what you can do. You can forward your calls to a friend whose phone is handled by a different LEC (Local Exchange Carrier). Have your friend then call the calling party back by dialing *69. Basically your friend is now dialing a long distance call and the number they dial will have to show on their bill.

The other thing you can do is switch your telephone service from unlimited local calling to per call billing (this is good if you don't make a lot of calls to begin with otherwise it could get costly). When you do that then any private call you receive you can then dial *69 to call them back. You won't be able to see the callerID on your phone but you will be able to see it on your phone bill since they bill you by the call.

EDITED: How do I defeat Caller-ID blocking? this site has great info on all things telephone including your question. I was not completely accurate in what I stated above. Your friend needs to be in a different LATA not LEC. Looks like multiple LECs can be part of the same LATA which would defeat the *69 feature if they're in the same LATA.

I'm wondering why you "need" to know? I'm assuming you aren't picking up the calls. Do you have an answering machine to screen calls?

The way we work, any callers where the name is not listed or we don't recognize the number, we let the answering machine pick it up. If the caller wants to talk to us, they will leave a message. If they don't, then we assume it was either an automated call, a telemarketer or someone we don't want to talk to. So we don't worry about it.

Must work differently in NY then. As far as I know *82 only unblocks your own number when you try to call other parties. Perhaps what you got was "call trace" or "call trap" which are services (for a fee) offered by the phone company.

There are ways that you can get the number or at least screen the calls, but it might cost you a little. There are services like spokenbuzz where you can get a phone number that will automatically screen calls from unkonwn callerids. Then it will forward that call to your real phone.

SO you can give everyone your spokenbuzz number instead of your real number. Or, you can forward all your calls to your SpokenBuzz number and then have it forward to another number, like your cell, etc.

    -Dave

p.s. I have noticed that the callerid of some blocks shows up on the forwarded call, so that might the answer right there.
