what might be some of the reasons why a "new collar"would be hesitant to join a union?

Union dues could be a reason, also a personal dislike of the union officials, maybe the person does not believe the union would be any better at employee representation than him representing himself, and could be the person does not feel union dues fairly represent the worker.
