Do you mean Suffolk County, Long Island?

Exactly what are your skills and interests?

You say that you are handy. How about becoming a handyman?

You can advertise on the Internet for free. Among other things, I am a handyman.

Try putting the following in a Google search, or on any seach engine for that matter. Clough Quad Cities. You will see my ads all over the place. They are all free and I get more results off of them than my ads in the Yellow Pages.

You will know how to word your ads if you study the ones that I have posted.

There are other things that you can do to get jobs. But, it would help to know what your skills and interests are first.
