Haha oh no, it's not a trade secret.

Often, jewelers sell their scrap precious metals back to the companies or refineries that they bought it from. The refineries pay for scraps (even minuscule filings!) depending on the weight of the total scrap. They can then add the scraps back to the "melting pot," so to speak, and it'll go into other orders. The expectation is then that the money you receive for your scrap would then go toward your next order (it's not required, but it's the unwritten rule/advice).

OR for an extra fee (of course), if you have enough scrap to make a nugget or bar, or I think even wire, you can request that they only reconstitute the scrap for you. You would have to make your order at that time, however.

I'm not sure who exactly you can send your scrap back to, but I'll look it up and ask around and get back to you on that.

Anyway, good luck selling your gold!

(This reminds me: I should sell my scrap silver sometime soon...)

So I asked around and a place that buys scrap metal like I described above is Hauser and Miller.

Here is their website, which describes the process and the charges: Hauser & Miller - Refining Service

I live in Missouri and have used Arch Enterprises before. They are a refiner that works a lot with the big film companies refining silver, but they also help consumers. You can find them at Arch Enterprises.

There are many internet sites available to sell your scrap gold. I have used Sell Jewelry | Cash For Gold | Sell Gold Jewelry | Price of Gold before and had a good experience. I have heard some negative things about other similiar companies which I wont name, but the best advice is to just do your research.

There are some very important factors when determining where to sell your gold. Most importantly you want to make sure you know how much cash you will get for your gold and other jewelry while you still have the opportunity to get your items back.

Sell Gold for the Most Cash at YourGold.com and Sell Gold for the Most Cash at YourGold.com feature the exclusive 10-Day Gold-Back Guarantee. Before you sell your gold anywhere, check us out.

My friends & I have used hardgoldcash.com. They have been in the recycling business for some time and were very fair. ( no middleman) they give you 15 days to return your check if not happy and get your gold back ! Now that is service.

If you're collecting gold in order to sell it, then these scrap gold refiners probably are your best bet. I'd use one of the big scrap gold and jewelry buyers for regular broken jewelry and stuff.

But if you want to sell to jewelers in bulk, the problem is getting it certified. They can't tell right off the bat if its pure gold, full of lead, or whatever. You might have to sell at a discount in order to offload it.
