Muslims and birthdays

Do muslims celebrate birthday's of family and friends? My boyfriend is religious and he said muslims dont celebraite birthday's.

its bidah(innovation) to celebrates muhammeds birthday sallahu aleihi wasallam cuz he didnt celebrate his own birthday him self, neither did the companions or their followers, so how can we celebrate his birthday if the best generrations after the prophet sallahu aleihi wasallam did not celebrate it. The prophet sallahu aleihi wasallam said" The best of mankind is my generation, then those who follow them , and then those who follow them.
