Second, they have to get a brokerage firm to file an IPO (Initial Public Offerring) where their stock is first offered to the public for sale. This involves a great deal of paperwork to satisify SEC reg.
Generally startups are not the subject of IPOs. What usually happens is the company starts up, shows its a viable business, then goes public.
