"Tell-me-about-yourself" means, Tell me about your qualifications.

a. Prepare ahead of time a five to ten minute discussion of your qualifications.
b. Discuss your experiences.
c. Tell how well you performed (resulting in raises, promotions, innovative
designs, sales volume, increased profits, etc.)

I am actually reading the book Interview Power: Selling Yourself Face To Face by Tom Washington. In the book for this question, he suggests being prepared for this question by knowing what you are going to say. Although, don't sound rehearsed, but have a good idea of the topics you want to point out. Such things should include briefly talking about your education or work history and be sure to point out some of the interesting aspects of each job. Also explain some of your results, which will cause you to be able to tell them about your accomplishments.

The examples you suggest are things he has probably already asked about, will ask about, or they are included in your resume. I think the question is another way of asking "Why should I hire you instead of someone else with the same qualifications."

As you prepare for an interview remember that qualifications alone may not be enough. What are the qualities that set you apart from those with the same education and experience.

I assume you're trying to get an entry-level position...You should have a 30 second answer ready. Prepare by knowing something about the company - what they do and how you might help them meet their goals. Say something about yourself that makes you interesting to the company. If you're interviewing to get a job in retail sales, sayinclude something like...I have an excellent eye for what looks good on people...My friends frequently ask me to shop with them when they are looking for an outfit that helps them look their best! If you're looking for work in an office, you might include something about your ability to work well with others and your eagerness to learn more about whatever it is the company produces. Just as important as what you say, is how you say it! It isn't so much what you say, but how you present yourself. This is usually asked to help you relax a bit before getting to the serious interview questions. It is perfectly OK...and expected...to say something personal (not TOO personal), such as: recent education completed, recent success in a previous job and your desire to expand in that area. Totally new to job market? Then tell them about something you worked hard at, how that felt rewarding to have succeeded so well and tell them how you want to build on that success. Good luck -

I agree with WSJanus about it is an icebreaker, to help you relax. This should be prepared.

Do not talk about personal life. Do talk to the job description: e.g; "School was exhilarating, I learned a lot and loved working with new ideas." Do talk about the recent times (this year), and how it makes you feel... e.g; "I've worked towards a steady work load..." Or... "I have been enjoying traveling and meeting new people... " Again, any concept as it applies to the basics of this job description.

If you are on a complete career change, explain the basics (steady, long hours, great people, on-time, good at details, travel or other specifics) of your recent work life, and how it appears this new job builds on those strengths and your enthusiasm.
