How can I get the registration information for a web site if it is not a registrar listed at the whois/internic. I know that the info (date of expiration of domain etc) is out there but I forget where.

It depend on who it is registered with. You can check out: http://www.whois.sc - some sites like Go Daddy will charge you a little more to have your name be held privately. Also, if you do a whois search, it should tell you the registrar, and then maybe go to that site to determine the info you need.
