How to connect laptop to PC
I've been meaning to transfer the files from my laptop to PC for a while and today I've finally bought Ethernet crossover cable... But unfortunately I do not know where to go from here.

They are both running XP with SP1. As I want to transfer files form laptop to PC, I understand laptop is going to be host computer and I have tried using Network wizard but still with no success. What I have realised is during Network setup wizard it asks to select a device either COM1 or LPT1. Maybe the problem is on my laptop it only shows LPT1 and not COM1. Could this be the problem? From my understanding communication between 2 computers uses COM1 so what do I need to do in order to get COM1 on my laptop?

I've even tried setting similar IP addresses for both PCs, but as I didn't fully understand how to do that either I have set my IP address to what it was before.

Can somebody please help me! Thanks in advance.

If you are using a crossover cable then neither COM1 or LPT1 is correct. Try using the TRANSFER FILES AND SETTINGS wizard.

Thanks for your suggestion but can you tell me how I can access that? I've never seen anything like that before on Windows. Sorry, I'm not too computer savvy

One of the first things you need to learn how to do is use the Help facility that comes with almost all programs including Windows. If you have gone to Start and Help and searched on TRANSFER FILES AND SETTINGS you would have found it. Its under Programs>accessories>System Tools.

You can also click on Start, and you'll see Help and Support, try that. Good Luck, and please read all the help files and user manuals you can, that it the best way to get to know your computer. I still use my old '.. for Idiot' books when I help my friends learn and they benefit from then also, but there are so many tutorials on the net now you don't need to leaf through anymore books, and most documents are in PDF format and as long as you have Acrobat Reader, at least version 6 or 7, which are free, you can read your heart out. Happy Computing.

    Jet,

Here is a straightfwd how-to using MS's (basic) NetBEUI protocol. It works well for Win to Win PCs. You will be using your PCs 10/100 network adapters (NICs) - NOT the serial, LPT or SER, ports.

    http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...beui.htm#HowTo

    Any Q's, just ask.

Awesome Chery! Glad to hear it. Where there is a will, there is a way... with such info available on the net, there is very little excuse for anyone not learning to become more educated and self-sufficient... keep those neurons movin' along... :D

I'm old and sick but not dead yet, and we learn till the last minute. I just want to make sure I learn what I like to instead of what's forced down my throat by others - a job, like many other things in life, must be tolerable or even enjoyable, since we spend a lot of time at it. I always loved learning and passing on what I learn - thanks again for the good hints.

Chery, well in this case, 2 out of 3 is a whole lot better than 3 out of 3!
