Making thumbnais to save space

Hi, I am making a webpage http://www.faucetsforsale.com/ (click on find yourfaucet and click on single handle shower valves) and have put some thumbnails on there to refer to larger images. I have done this to save space for the end user. My question is am I doing it correct? Basically I have just told the browser to except the bigger image within the confines of smaller measurements, meaning that the image on the server is still large. Is this really going to reduce the time it takes to download the image or is there more to it. I have seen where there are thumbnail programs I can download. Is that something I should look into or am I fine doing it this way? Thanks.
Darrel
