IP Address? VIA ethernet connection

So, I build a computer loaded windows on it and the internet would just pop up and everything was fine. I decided to load windows xp professional and everything was fine with the internet. I had an old computer and needed a ribbon out of my computer to test it, when I put it back and loaded my windows back up I cannot get an internet connection. It says that it is sending but not recieving. When I plug it in it says "you just connected to the internet you should sign up for a .net password". I search every way possible to get a connection. I checked my hardware device, and it says everything is working fine. It will tell me to maybe renew my ip address, when I do cmd ipconfig it says the media is not connected, media?....how is it media? Anyways does anyone have any other ideas? Im confused. Please please please help. Thanks.

Charity
